After the German invasion in September 1939, France, along with Britain, sent military aid to Poland. This marked the beginning of the most devastating war in human history: World War II. France joined the side of the Allies, which included Russia, England, and eventually the United States.
In May 1940, the German army attacked and overwhelmed the French defenses. Seven weeks after the invasion Paris fell under Nazi rule, along with the rest of Northern France.
For the next four years, Northern France would be occupied by German Nazis. During this time 78,000 French Jews were deported to concentration camps.
Northern France was finally liberated in 1944 after the Allies' attack on Normandy. Several months later France celebrated the defeat of the German army and the end of World War II on May 7, 1945, V-E Day.
